Primary: Pre-K & Kindergarten
Ages 3-6 Years
The Montessori classroom is a child-sized world. Whatever is in the world outside can be incorporated meaningfully in the Montessori classroom. By careful selection of materials by the Guides, an environment is set up that allows the child a place to explore life on a level he or she can understand. The materials or exercises are designed to stimulate independent exploration. This prepared environment entices the child to proceed at his or her own pace from simple activities to more complex ones. Through this process, the child’s natural curiosity is satisfied and he or she begins to experience the job of discovering the world about him or her.
Community life is a large part of the Montessori classroom. The children learn to feel responsibility for themselves, each other, and their environment. Materials and curriculum center around Practical Life, Sensorial Experience, Spiritual Growth, Language, Math, Geography, Science, Art and Music.
The children are free to make individual choices according to his or her needs and abilities. Most of the materials allow for self-correction. By repeating the experience, the child learns to concentrate on the task and to solve progressively complex problems through intelligence and initiative.
